Oh, Behave! – Cafe Etiquette
Cafes are meant for people to relax. Most relaxing places have few rules. Cos it wouldn’t be relaxing anymore if there were many rules. Heh. But I think, it’s still fair for a cafe-goer to have some guidelines la. I’ve thought up a few which I think are more pertinent. Feel free to give more suggestions!
- Many people feel embarrassed staying long at a place if they need to limit their spending. On average, I think $5-7 spending per 1.5 – 2 hours at the cafe is a good gauge. If you are planning on staying longer than that, do consider getting a dessert or a 2nd drink like a fruit-tea (don’t over caffeinate!).
- If the cafe is crowded, don’t take up more space than you should be. This includes not studying and doing homework there even though the cafe owner may not chase you out. Surfing is not only becoming increasingly accepted, it is now actually a norm.
- Don’t spread all your homework and notes all over the tables. The cafe owners make it a big point to keep the place neat; so don’t mess up the place. Just because you paid for a coffee doesn’t give you a right to make it your home (even though the waiters tell you to make yourself at home..).
- It’s nice if you can bring a multi-plug if you’re going to a cafe you know is likely not to have too many powerpoints for your laptop.
- Mute the sound!
- Don’t use your books to chope the seats and then head off for lunch/dinner for 1.5 hours!
Hmmm. That’s not too many rules, is that?
Cafes are meant to be enjoyed!
Love thyself!

5-7 per 1-2 is a really good gauge! like watching a movie or something…
i think it would be cool too if you had signs to say how much longer you’re gonna stay, so people can decide whether to wait or not!

I too am annoyed by the ‘choping’ of seats by students for hours on end while they go off to take shopping breaks. Love your cafe ‘rules’.
I usually go for the coffee and the quiet (very rare). Glad I don’t sit around longer than an hour….I tend to get a backache otherwise.

Seah Street Deli at Raffles Hotel has free flow of coffee – latte, expresso, etc. You don’t have to finish your coffee to get a refill, they offer to give you a hot one. Usually no crowd after lunch.
